Down in a valley carved in the rocks , there was a beautiful city with its docks

Days started here with streets being cleaned, the fire hose being opened the night being weaned…

Travels here were in the beautiful trains, the city was beautiful during the rains

College was only lectures, fun and canteen, nostalgic it is to think how the city has been

Of poli bhaji kendras and small little shops , selling everything from ladders to lollypops

Down in a valley carved in the rocks , there was a beautiful city with its docks

With veni laden hair bobbing in the crowd ,and young beautiful damsels who weren’t really loud

Batata vadas and dabelis were the order of the day, pani puris and chaat just a small distance away…

That was then and I came back after years, to feel the same laughter and the emotional tears

Everything was the same, the same was the crowd, But why did I feel I am in a shroud?

Down in a valley carved in the rocks , there was a beautiful city with its docks

No more were the streets being cleaned in the mornings, all I saw were notes of political warnings

Trains were no longer as safe as they were, so many accidents and crashes, in the daily endeavor

Veni was gone,  the hair had got shorter, These were Gen Next they definitely seemed smarter

The circular garden I played in a baby, today had become a flyover, for the better maybe…

Down in a valley carved in the rocks , there was a beautiful city with its docks

Batata vadas were passé, burgers were in , dabelis had vanished,  frankies and pizzas were kingpin

Pani puris were there but so were brands Gen Next, I longed for that hot tea in a shanty at my behest.

Everyone seemed to be running a rat race, Be it education, be it fashion , the city was in a maze

College is now a haze, and fun reality, Education seemed to be another nitty grittty

Down in a valley carved in the rocks , there was a beautiful city with its docks

The camaraderie and the banter was now online, I longed for the closeness, I longed to pine

I went to my window to get my scenic view, I saw a huge mall outside, gone was the green hue

I took a morning walk and searched for my park,  I saw concrete structures leaving me in the dark

Where is my city, where is the gleam ?  I thought to myself maybe I was in a bad dream..

Down in a valley carved in the rocks , there was a beautiful city with its docks

No more were the evenings reserved for friends, Everyone was busy mending their expensive car dents

I said we would go to the nearby hill station,  This is passé as people were headed to a different nation.

I longed for the poha from the lady next door, but she was gone,  now there was a busy family of four.

Airports were stylish, and were very exclusive, now they are travel stations with services ready to give

Down in a valley carved in the rocks , there was a beautiful city with its docks

Yet I had that pang of seeing my old city, of the city with the beautiful docks carved in the valley.

I wish to come back again and wish this all back, but I realize

that my city is laid away in a memory stack.
